Advent alerts us to possibilities beyond the every day. Usually, we're too lulled by the steady sussurations of quiet breathing, the constant, consistent, numbing motions of modern me-seeking, too anesthetized to engage Divine realities.

Then Advent comes. It disrupts us. Stirs us. Awakens us. Perhaps like me, you've found that you've been caught mid-stream, stoking the fires of self-seeking, feeding the fires that consume but never refine or purify.

Advent's fire and its scintillating light are nothing like this. They point to the light of Christmas morning and to the dawn of the Son of God. It leaves no doubt, that given human flesh, the Lord of life can, has, and continues to redeem what the darkness had left for dead.
